Osprey chick coughs up a pellet - Loch Arkaig Osprey Cam

One of the chicks casts up a pellet. This is normal for lots of birds of prey but not seen as often with Ospreys. Most other birds of prey will cough up fur, feathers, teeth, nails etc as well as bones but as Ospreys eat only fish and have a specialised intestine with very strong enzymes designed to break down their meal, they often digest everything, bones and all. However they sometimes do co...

Grow more trees and stop cutting them down for new builds
amazing so special .thank you ❤❤❤
Have so enjoyed watching Louis and Dorcha this year up until the chicks being moved due to poor feeding.
What a fantastic project! Lovely to see the school's involved too.
Just brilliant to see this! I had no idea of the beautiful tree under the nest and the surrounds, gorgeous countryside. Super job team and absolutely perfect music! Sadly I can't seem to link to the website for chat and updates of fish deliveries etc this year. I get this: The request is blocked. 20240701T002123Z-16b86d94878mnnnz28man3xzrc0000000fsg000000007fgt Any suggestions or solutions welcome :)
Poor Dorcha 😱
Hard working Louis caring for his family.
Beautiful view of the tree & nest 2. Wish the weather would improve for the Ospreys this year. Hail & gale force winds to end of June. Dorcha has proved herself to be a devoted Mum, Louis the best fisherbird ever. 😻🏴
Beautiful view of nest1. Have noticed it's more sheltered from the gale force winds & hail that nest2 gets often. Still have hopes this nest will be claimed, 2025 now.
Seen many Ancient trees here in Scotland. Some almost dead, but holding a wealth of life. They should be protected.
Poor thing, what atrocious conditions
Is this the video from a couple of weeks ago, when the same happened? Had her tail into the wind then, too.
Hail & winds up to last week in June! Dorcha is so devoted to sheltering the eggs, then chicks, well done Mum.
Goodness, not seen that happen before! Poor Dorcha, sensibly hunkering down over the chicks. It's so warm & calm down here in Oxon, hard to imagine the wind being so strong up there. Glad no obvious harm done to any of the family.
It shows that this was taken on Friday 21st June - its is not today!
@@StephanieCastelli-rq2nu Today, Thursday, it's even worse 😥
More Katie please!
I'll see what I can do! Thank you for the comment 👍
Thank you for sharing 💞
Beautiful 💜
Nice
Absolutely mesmerising.
Just beautiful ❤
This was great!
This is awesome and I thank you for highlighting the UK's amazing rainforests. However, on the Woodland Trust website it states: 'In the UK Ideal conditions for temperate rainforest are found along the UK's western seaboard, including: West coast of Scotland North and west Wales Devon Cornwall Cumbria parts of Northern Ireland.' Maybe this should now be expanded to include the following, from Guy Shrubsole's Rainforest project website and crowdfunded map, as there are areas and good-sized fragments in: Major temperate rainforest zones in Britain are: Scotland - West Coast Wales - Snowdonia and the Elenydd England - West Country, Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lancashire . Rainforest patches have been found outside Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and in North and West Yorkshire, Northumberland, Derbyshire and also Merseyside, and the zone stretches down through the Yorkshire Dales and into Yorkshire/Lancashire. So all these areas have additional potential. It is far more prevalent than many realise and can exist outside of the recognised zone too.
If you plant fruit trees, it will be beneficial for both animals and humans, as well as the environment, such as cherries, blueberries, etc., which can grow in England.
The ospreys can be very fierce and aggressive..I’ve seen one push, one, out of the nest and also when there’s 3 the youngest doesn’t always make it ..and the mom almost seems relieved
Very sad news about the youngest chick, nature is hard sometimes.. I'm concerned that Louis seems to have gone AWOL, very few fish deliveries these past days..
Hi there, don't worry! Fishing is a variable business and Louis has had a couple of poor days lately likely due to cool temperatures keeping the fish inactive. This morning he has brought in an extraordinary six fish before 7am. 😊
@@woodlandtrust Thank you. Yes, things have improved a lot, and the squabbling seems to have stopped too. All good now. 🙂
Beautiful nest trail camera video. I like ospreys very much.
I don't know why they're are using Western Hemlock, its not a native and casts heavy shade. Commercial opportunities.
Hi Paul, thank you for your comment. Western hemlock is a non-native conifer tree that was introduced to Britain in the 1800’s. Its presence in our woods, like other conifer trees, is a result of forestry practices over many decades. We want to see more of this species taken out to restore ancient woodland and allow native woodland species and associated wildlife to establish and thrive, but it isn’t always economical to do so. Providing an end product for species such as western hemlock makes it a more economically viable option that will support ancient woodland restoration and allow native tree species to establish in their place.
Has one of the chicks died
Yes yesterday.
Yes- sadly- the smallest one.
Shame they all looked healthy
Hi there, yes sadly one of the chicks has passed away and may be visible on the livestream until Louis or Dorcha removes it from the nest. While this may be distressing to viewers, it is a part of nature and it's common for only one or two osprey chicks to successfully fledge the nest each season, even with experienced parents like the Loch Arkaig ospreys. Each osprey breeding season is unique but often shows the challenges these birds face in the wild.
Not seen that happen before!
Looks like the littlest one passed, or is very close, this June 16th. Got picked on and starved out. Sad. What will become of the corpse now?
Doesn't this nest breed very aggressive chicks?
Pardon the repeat: Looks like the littlest one passed, or is very close, this June 16th. Got picked on and starved out. Sad. What will become of the corpse now?
Survival instincts level on high
Horrid creature and Dorcha is oblivious

Was a lean few hours indeed....Chick #1 did try to fight back a few times, but backed off....Albeit , chick #1 is slightly bigger, in head, and body with more new growth feathers coming.. perhaps chick#2, and chick #3 are female ?
That is one nasty chick.
Just trying to be fed, all calm now. In fact chick#2 was at the back of the line for feeds this morning !
Was the ground deliberately cleared around the tree? And the top branches pruned?

Ahhhhh - I love this video so much! I was smiling the whole time - We seriously mean everything that we said in the video - the energy, optimism and friendliness of everyone before, during and after this event is something I'll never forget <3 Thank you so much for giving us young people the opportunity to inspire and make REAL change!
Too late for nesting now? Despite occasional osprey visits.
Wonderful to see and gain perspective. Thank you. 🙏🏻 ❤
Thank you Woodland Trust. This gives me a whole new perspective and definitely adds to the experience of watching them. It's amazing how quickly the chicks are growing, with Dorcha and Louis both doing a brilliant job.
Good video, but why the dreadful music?
